Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Platinum Coin History: 

The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf appeals to investors and collectors worldwide for its beauty and purity, with the classic maple leaf design. Introduced in 1988 on the same day as the popular Silver Maple Leaf coin, the original Platinum Maple was available in four denomininations; 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 ozt (troy ounce) and was .9995 purity.   Coins made of 1/20 ozt platinum were released in 1993.

In 2002 the RCM (Royal Canadian Mint) ceased production of the .9995 Platinum Maples.  In 2009 the platinum maples returned, with a few changes.  The new purity was higher, 99.99%, and the portrait of the queen was the one still used today, showing her majesty at the age of 79.  The only denomination in platinum was the one ounce coin.  The fractionals remained retired.

2023 coins feature the date range of the Queen’s seventy year reign, ended with her passing in 2022.  Although the mint has up to 3 years following the coronation of King Charles III to put his image on the next coins, his new coin portrait has been finalized.  All indications are that 2023 is the last year we will see Her Majesty’s image on the currency.
