The crowned shield is flanked by the cdrowned lion of England and the White Unicorn of Scotland. The motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter, “honi soit qui mal y pense” (“May he be shamed who thinks badly of it”) inscribed on the garter surrounding the shield.
